Question and Answer

self-diagnosis or as a substitute for a professional dental exam and consultation . Each
case will vary depending on the needs and concerns of each individual.
What are Cavities?
When you get "plaque" on your teeth, what you are getting is a "film of bacteria." These
bacteria stick to your teeth, and one of the things they do is create acid as a by-product of
their metabolism. The acid can eat through the enamel of the tooth and cause a cavity -- a
hole through the enamel.
There are three parts to a tooth:
1. The outer, very hard enamel
2. The inner, much softer dentin (Dentin is like ivory.)
3. The core pulp, consisting of nerves and blood vessels
Once the acid breaks through the enamel, bacteria invade the dentin and can eat through it
fairly quickly. If they make it to the pulp, that is when you get a tooth infection and need a
root canal.
What is a Root Canal?
If a tooth's pulp (nerve and blood supply) become infected or inflamed, root canal treatment
is often the only way to save the tooth. This involves removing the damaged nerve tissue
and bacteria completely from inside the tooth and later placing a filling inside the roots.
What about teeth whitening?
There are various options to whitening your teeth. Bleaching can be an in-office procedure
(chairside). Usually involves one appointment of 1 hour to an hour and half . The bleaching
agent is applied to your teeth and activated with a special light.
There is also an at-home procedure wherein you will wear a custom-made mouthguard
filled with a bleaching gel for one hours daily, or at night, for approximately two weeks.
Some toothpastes have added whitening agents and can be used as an adjunct to the other
two procedures. In any case, there is no reason to ever again suffer the embarrassment of
discolored teeth.
What is Gum Disease?
Disease of your gums caused by build up of plaque on your teeth that remains in contact
with your gums. The plaque causes a reaction in your gums that in its early stages is called
Gingivitis. It is characterized by gums that bleed easily when touched or flossed. Most
people have some degree of gingivitis. Gingivitis, if left unchecked, leads to a more severe
disease called Periodontitis. Some people however can have a genetic pre-disposition to the
disease. The disease once initiated can progress more rapidly in people who have diabetes,
especially if the diabetes is poorly controlled.

What are dental Implants?
For people who have lost teeth, implants provide artificial teeth that look more natural and
feel more secure. Implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth or support a
bridge, full dentures or partial dentures.A dental implant is used in restorative dentistry.
There are several types of implants, The most widely accepted and successful is the
osseointegrated implant, based on the fact that titanium could be successfully incorporated
into bone, when bone grows on and into the rough surface of the implanted titanium. This
forms a structural and functional connection between the living bone and the implant.
